Introduction
Urban beekeeping has rapidly transformed from a niche hobby into a globally visible symbol of environmental awareness and civic engagement. As cities continue to expand and ecological degradation intensifies, honey bees have unexpectedly emerged as ambassadors of urban sustainability, creatures that simultaneously reveal the fragility of ecosystems and the possibilities for new forms of coexistence between humans and other species. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding rooftop hives, community beekeeping projects, and media narratives about “saving the bees,” the socio-ecological implications of urban beekeeping remain only partially understood. This study applies the tripartite ecological framework of in, of, and for the city to unpack the complex interactions among bees, beekeepers, and urban environments, offering a comprehensive, human-centered interpretation of what urban beekeeping is and what it can realistically achieve. From this perspective, “beekeeping in the city” refers to practices that are urban merely in location, not in intention. Here, the hive serves as a private, often intimate space where individuals cultivate a personal relationship with honey bees.
Method
This article was prepared as a narrative review and conceptual analysis. Relevant literature was identified through a targeted search of major scientific databases using combinations of keywords related to urban beekeeping, pollinators, urban greening, environmental justice, and socio-ecological systems. In addition, reference lists of key papers and review articles were screened to identify additional relevant sources. Studies were first screened by title and abstract, and irrelevant records were excluded. Full texts of the remaining articles were then reviewed, and the extracted information was organized thematically around the main issues addressed in the papers, including the ecological role of urban beekeeping, social and environmental implications, interactions with urban biodiversity, and associated challenges and opportunities. The collected evidence was synthesized qualitatively to develop a socio-ecological framework for urban beekeeping.
Results
The ecological and social effects (positive or negative) are largely unintentional by-products. By contrast, “beekeeping of the city” represents a more embedded form of practice, where beekeepers consciously navigate urban ecological dynamics, forage availability, colony density, market forces, and neighborhood relations. This form is driven by practical necessity: in a city, every hive is situated in a shared landscape, interacting with gardens, parks, and other beekeepers. Finally, “beekeeping for the city” reframes the practice as a deliberate civic act: an attempt to make nature visible again in spaces dominated by concrete and asphalt, to foster environmental literacy, and to mobilize public engagement in urban sustainability. These three modes do not exist as rigid categories; rather, urban beekeeping communities move fluidly across them, often blending motivations and outcomes. A central promise of urban beekeeping lies in its potential contribution to pollination services. Many flowering plants (both cultivated and wild) rely on pollinators for reproduction, and honey bees, due to their managed nature and global distribution, are often celebrated as keystone contributors. Yet the actual ecological value of urban honey bees varies widely across cities. Pollination deficits are not universal, and in many contexts, wild bees outperform or complement honey bees. Cities like Tehran, Esfahan, Berlin, and New York illustrate this variability. While honey bees can increase fruit set in under-pollinated urban orchards, high hive density may simultaneously suppress native bee populations through resource competition and altered foraging patterns. Evidence from global studies and emerging Iranian research confirms that urban landscapes (often dominated by ornamental, non-native plants) can create uneven distributions of nectar and pollen, amplifying competition under certain conditions. Thus, the ecological contribution of urban honey bees cannot be assumed; it must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Beyond competition, the risk of pathogen transmission between managed honey bees and wild pollinators has recently become an urgent topic. Viral, fungal, and bacterial pathogens—once thought specific to honey bees—are now known to infect a wide range of species. Dense clusters of colonies, a common feature of urban beekeeping booms, can act as disease reservoirs, undermining conservation efforts aimed at native pollinator communities. Many beekeepers remain unaware of these scientific findings, underscoring the need for better public outreach, training, and community-level guidelines. In this regard, the “for the city” approach offers a pathway. If beekeeping is framed not merely as honey production but as stewardship, practitioners may be more likely to adopt responsible management practices aligned with broader ecological goals. Human–bee interactions are also shaped by concerns about public safety, especially the risk of stings in densely populated areas. Although serious allergic reactions are relatively rare, they cannot be dismissed in policy decisions. Urban beekeeping, therefore, requires thoughtful hive placement, responsible handling, and sometimes the use of signage or barriers to reduce conflict with neighbors. Interestingly, most beekeepers themselves normalize stings as part of the practice, often describing them as grounding or even meditative experiences. This contrast (between personal acceptance and public concern) highlights the social complexity of integrating semi-wild animals into the urban fabric. Economically, urban beekeeping occupies a spectrum ranging from a personal hobby to a meaningful livelihood. Some beekeepers rely on honey, wax products, hive management contracts, or swarm removal services to generate income. Yet perhaps more intriguing is the symbolic and cultural value of hyper-local honey. Jars labeled with neighborhood names “Downtown Honey,” “Vank Park Honey,” “Brooklyn Rooftop Honey” serve as artifacts of place-based identity and can strengthen social ties within communities. In Iran, similar trends are emerging through apitourism initiatives, local branding efforts, and educational programs. Still, the commercialization of urban beekeeping carries risks: when paired with broad urban greening efforts, it can unintentionally contribute to green gentrification, reinforcing socio-economic inequalities by privileging wealthy neighborhoods and marginalizing others. Amid these tensions, one of the most powerful contributions of urban beekeeping may be its ability to cultivate ecological literacy. Working with bees forces individuals to learn about flowering cycles, climate variability, plant–pollinator networks, and ecological feedback loops. This knowledge, once shared through workshops, community gardens, public hives, and school programs, can radiate outward—transforming not only individual beekeepers but neighborhoods and city cultures. This process, described here as ecological reconciliation, reconnects urban residents with the living systems that support their cities. Even those who ultimately stop keeping bees often remain engaged as advocates for pollinator-friendly landscapes and urban biodiversity. Looking ahead, the maturation of urban beekeeping depends on developing frameworks that go beyond the simplistic binary of banning or legalizing hives. Cities require landscape-level planning: regulating colony density based on forage availability, encouraging habitat restoration, providing beekeeper training, and fostering self-regulation within beekeeping communities. Urban policy must also recognize that ecological and social benefits are not distributed evenly across cities; histories of segregation, environmental injustice, and unequal access to green spaces shape these distributions. Ignoring this context risks transforming well-intentioned sustainability practices into mechanisms that perpetuate inequality. Ultimately, urban beekeeping represents a paradox: it can simultaneously support ecological awareness and threaten ecological balance; strengthen communities or exclude them; reconnect people with nature or reinforce idealized illusions of it. By situating beekeeping within the socio-ecological framework of “in, of, and for the city,” this study argues that the value of urban beekeeping depends not on the presence of bees alone but on how thoughtfully, responsibly, and inclusively humans choose to integrate them into urban life. Rather than viewing honey bees as saviors or intruders, cities must engage with them as partners in a complex, evolving landscape, one that demands humility, scientific understanding, community dialogue, and continuous learning.
Conclusions
In this light, urban beekeeping becomes much more than the management of a hive. It becomes a window into the future of human–nature relations in an increasingly urbanized world: a small but powerful model for imagining greener, more resilient, and more ecologically attuned cities.
